Activity 3

Using Google, I looked up information about Organic Milk. The Horizan Organic milk and other organic food sites have evidence of all the wonderful benefits of organic milk that make it worth the cost, but of course these organizations have an agenda. I found a research article from a Phd at the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin Madison called "The Science Behind Reported Benefits of Organic Milk" that concluded science doesn't support the health, nutrition, and safety claims of organic milk. It found that milk with the best health and nutrition comes from pastor fed cows. There were many other articles that supported the claim that pastor fed cows produce the most nutritious milk. The biggest issues with organic milk are nutrition, health, and safety. The nutrition factor of milk has a research based answer... pastor feed cows, which isn't necessarily the case with milk that has an organic label. The biggest health factor is bovine growth hormone. Most of the research says that it is not harmful, but there are some questions that can only be answered with more time and those who believe it isn't worth taking the risk for. After reading through this research, I have decided to buy milk from a local dairy that has pastor fed cows that are bovine growth hormone free, but isn't certified organic. The price of milk from this dairy is mid-range, in between the cost of certified organic milk at the store and Cream O Weber. Buying locally produced milk will provide more nutrition as well as support a local business. My questions haven't been answered completely, but I am satisfied enough to be happy with my decision.
